(Culture) German Politicians Argue over Gods Gender

A minister commented that the word God has a neutral rather than masculine gender.

A row has begun among German politicians, but its not about the economy, education, or foreign policy; the subject in question is Gods gender. The debate started when Family Minister Kristina Schroeder commented during an interview that when speaking about God, people dont need to use the masculine article das and can use the neutral article der instead. The article is not important, she added.

In German, nouns are considered masculine, feminine, or neutral, and there are three different articles to use with these genders. God has traditionally been considered masculine, but some people feel that this is sexist and argue that God is without gender. Schroeder revealed that she is in the gender neutral camp after being asked how she explained God to her daughter.

Although Schroeder received the backing of German Chancellor Angela Merkel, other prominent politicians were angry at her remarks. Bavarian social minister Christine Haderthauer said: This intellectualized nonsense leaves me speechless, and Stefan Mueller of the Christian Social Union said he was "bewildered by the inappropriate remarks.
