(Local) China Plans National Agricultural Market

The Ministry of Agriculture wants to stabilize food prices in the country.

The Chinese government last week announced that it would establish a series of national and regional markets in a bid to control and stabilize the prices of agricultural products. The Ministry of Agriculture will construct seven purpose-built national markets in the new year. They will serve as centers for pricing and distribution and will also be places where the latest agricultural information and technology can be discussed and exchanged.

The ministry made the announcement during a national conference on agriculture in Beijing and added that it would also establish local markets. The measures come as many across the country are alarmed by the recent violent fluctuations in price of goods like Chinese cabbage and green onions.

Speaking at the conference, Minister of Agriculture Hang Changfu said that the industry will face tough challenges in the months ahead, giving labor and land rental costs as examples. On a more positive note, he added that his ministry would announce new policies in the new year that should help farmers cope with the problems.
