(Health) Dentists Warn against Soda
Fizzy drinks are acidic and leave your teeth much weaker.
Dentists and health researchers are again warning the public about the dangers of soda and fruit juices. In addition to the high levels of sugar these beverages contain, they are also very acidic, which means they can lead to the erosion of teeth. One recent piece of research suggested that those who regularly drink acidic beverages are 6.5 times more likely to suffer dental erosion.
Acid wears down the protective enamel that covers teeth, leaving them more sensitive. Over time, the process can discolor teeth and even result in tooth decay. Paris Diderot Universitys Professor Pierre Colon explained: Teeth begin to lose mineral content when they are exposed to a pH of less than 5.5. Fizzy drinks, energy drinks, iced tea, fruit juice, flavored water, wine and beer all have pH levels of between 2.5 (equal to lemon juice) and 4.5.
Dentists say the best thing you can do for your teeth is to drink water. However, they add that drinking fizzy drinks with a meal is safer since you produce saliva when you chew, and that helps to neutralize the acid. They also advise rinsing your mouth with water or chewing sugar-free gum after having an acidic drink.
