(Education) Nursery Schools Go Online

Enter the Arnold and Porter Childrens Center in Washington and you will see groups of 4 and 5 year old children working on the computer as part of their regular classes. This shows the schools creative effort to use technology such as interactive stories and animated lessons as a tool to teach children letters, rhymes and numbers.

Latest figures show that the majority of new internet users are actually children ages 2-5. 23% of nursery students ages 3-5 have gone online and by kindergarten, 32% have done so, usually with parental guidance.Hence, children are growing up feeling that the computer is a normal extension of their regular lives.

Sally DItalia, the director of the center, believes the use of computer in class helps them develop basic problem solving and motor skills and says that It helps them become more relaxed, more adventurous, and more willing to take risks as they learn.

Computers and the internet are great tools to teach children. However, schools and educators should be careful and choose appropriate materials tailored towards the childs age and ability.
