The movie2012 is an American science fiction movie depicting the end of the world on December 21, 2012, and is popular for its fantastic disaster action scenes.But since this movie is based on a scientific discovery, it made people wonder Is this true? Will the world really end on December 21

The movie plot rests on a widely known Mayan prophecy. The Mayas were an ancient civilization in Mesoamerica noted for developing astronomy and calendar systems made up of 394-year periods called baktun.They were very religious and left prophecies etched in stone. One of their prophecies involved the number 13, which was a very important number to them.Since the end of the 13th baktun coincides with December 21, 2012, people take this to mean that time is up for mankind.

As the date approaches, experts are now trying to convince people that the prophecy doesnt mean an end but rather marks the start of a new era.Other prophecies speak of events occurring after the said date so Geoffrey Braswell, an anthropologist at the University of California, says that The ancient Maya clearly believed things would happen far into the future from now.Experts added that the Mayan prophecies are usually about droughts or diseases and not eventful things like the end of the world.
