(Business) Singapores Growth Drops

The country has been hit by a slump in manufacturing.

A depressed manufacturing sector has caused growth to slow in Singapore. Between October and December last year, the economy grew by 3.6% from the same period in 2010. Thats down from 5.9% in the previous quarter. Figures show that over the full year, the economy grew only 4.8%, which is dramatically lower than 2010s growth rate of 14.5%.

As with other manufacturing powerhouses in the region, Singapore has been hit by a combination of problems. Debt problems and struggling economies in Europe and the US have impacted demand and the supply chain has been upset by heavy flooding in Thailand. Figures show that in November, industrial output shrank by 9.6% on the previous year. Amazingly, electronics production was down 30.1%.

Singaporean Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong told people not to expect the situation to improve this year. The external environment is uncertain. Debt problems in Europe are far from solved. Next year looks like being difficult for the global economy, he said, adding: As a small, open country, Singapore will inevitably be affected.
