The French president will have a tough challenge to win reelection.

French President Nicolas Sarkozy came out fighting at the start of the new year. He faces an election in just four months, and he is currently trailing in the polls to leading rival, Francois Hollande, who represents the Socialists. Sarkozy said 2012 will be full of risks, and he warned that incorrect decisions could derail the nations economy.

Talking up his experience in dealing with the eurozones financial troubles, the president said: 2012 will be a year full of risks but also full of possibilities V full of hope, if we know how to face the challenges, full of dangers, if we stand still. Sarkozy also promised to do more to cut unemployment and pledged that there would be no new austerity measures in the coming year.

Hollande responded by criticizing the presidents handling of the economy. He pointed towards the large unemployment figure, and said that the country is a brink of recession, and called on voters to choose a new president, to choose a new destiny for France. Hollandes communications director Manuel Valls also hit out at Sarkozys speech, labeling it as fear-mongering. This is Nicolas Sarkozy's trademark and it will be his trademark during the campaign, he said, to play on fears and on fear of the crisis.
