(Politics) US to Financially Support Syrian Rebels

The US has announced plans to recognize the Syrian National Coalition offices as a diplomatic foreign mission and increase non-lethal assistance, including medical aid and food rations, in the form of US$27 million dollars.

The decision came after the Syrian Opposition Coalition (SOC) sent a delegation to Washington led by their president, Ahmad Jarba, who will meet US Secretary of State John Kerry. Although the move does not formally recognize the SOC as Syrian government, Marie Harf, a US Department of State spokesperson, stated, Its a reflection of our partnership with the coalition as the legitimate representative of the Syrian people.

The upgrade in status will facilitate banking and security measures for the SOC in the US, as well as help it to reach out to Syrians who live in the US.

According to Jarba, This is an important step in the path toward a new Syria, its recognition on the international stage, and its relations with Syrian nationals in the US. Jarba added, The new status provides a diplomatic platform for the Coalition to advance the interests of the Syrian people at all levels.
