(Culture) Normal-Sized Mannequins Hit Stores
For decades, retail stores have displayed their clothing and accessories on super skinny models. However, with the public no longer resembling these slim figures, retailers around the world have rolled out more realistic mannequins in an attempt to represent the shape of their shoppers better so that they can visualize themselves in the clothing when shopping.
Among the retailers, Swedish store Ahlens was one of the first to use curvy mannequins. Photos of its models quickly went viral, with thousands of women around the world celebrating the more natural proportions. Likewise, Debenhams, one of Britains largest department stores, also began to use plus-sized mannequins to model their clothes last December. According to its director, it hopes to help people feel more comfortable about their body and start a trend for other retailers to follow.
It is said that the representation of mannequins and models is increasingly impacting the fashion industry, for both men and women. A few years ago companies in Spain were ordered to display mannequins at least size 6 or larger in order to help combat anorexia. Meanwhile, Israel put a new law in place last year, whereby fashion models are required to have a BMI of at least 18.5.
