The quiet Asian nation has a wealth of attractions including beautiful scenery and wonderful temples.

Laos, long neglected by much of the world, is now earning itself a reputation as an idyllic holiday destination. One of the most incredible places there is Phonsavan, which boasts the Plain of Jars. Hundreds of jars of all different sizes stand on the open plains. While some of them are fairly small, others are bewilderingly large.

The nations capital, Vientienne, is a gloriously laid-back place with ancient temples and a magical view of the Mekong River. Many of the temples are brightly decorated, but the most picturesque, Wat Si Saket, is simple in design and features hundreds of statues of the Buddha. The city is also home to the Golden Stupa and Putaxay, a giant, arched building that celebrates the countrys dubious military history.

No visit to Laos would be complete without a trip to Luang Prabang. There are two sides to this quiet town. At one end, buildings from the French colonial era give the place an European air. The other face of Luang Prabang is made up of its temples. There are scores of them here, and most of them house large numbers of young monks. If you wake up early enough, you can see the monks procession through the town.
