(Local) Changhua Firms Charged Over Wastewater

Five electroplating factories in Changhua county have been fined for releasing industrial wastewater into irrigation channels by the Environmental Protection Bureau.

Bureau Director Liu Yu-ping stated that fines will be more than NT$52 million (US$1.7 million) for polluting 278 hectares of farmland, and is based on evidence by prosecutors who dug up pipelines near the factories.

Fines of NT$49 million were levied for infractions going back to 2009, with additional crop damage fines bringing the total to NT$52.79 million. Offending factories will also be charged with additional fees resulting from the treatment of 44 hectares of land used for rice farming. According to the law, compensation can only be retroactive for a maximum period of five years.

High pollution in the area has been a problem since 2002, when the government first launched a farmland treatment project to deal with high pollution levels in the area.

Chi Po-Lins documentary Beyond Beauty: Taiwan From Above recently brought attention to the environmental impacts of such practices, showing how wastewater from heavy industry have polluted rivers and turned them yellow.
