Overall, it has been both a terrific and terrible year for movies.

Even though Hollywood has been slammed for its lack of originality, with the year being dominated by sequels and reboots, the films still managed to shine at the box office. The box office winner of 2013 is Iron Man 3, grossing an astounding US$1.2 billion worldwide. The films roaring success can be attributed to the abundant action and wit, as well as Robert Downey Jr.s offbeat performance and effortless charm. Meanwhile, other blockbusters such as Fast Furious 6, Thor: The Dark World and The Hunger Games: Catching Fire also delivered superior sequels.

As for this years losers, The Lone Ranger is unarguably one of the worst films of 2013. It was not only heavily criticized for being lame and racist, but also regarded by many as being on par with last years John Carter, another Disney production that cost a fortune to make but failed miserably at the box office. Other movies that went astray include After Earth, R.I.P.D. and Pain and Gain.
