美國麻州總醫院睡眠醫學主任Jeffrey Ellenbogen醫師說,在飛機上睡覺會如此困難的原因有一大堆。其中之一就是溫度。要有適當的睡眠,你的身體需要能夠釋放熱能,不過如果你身穿合成纖維的衣物,身體就無法散熱。比這更重要的是,他說:「人們低估了在飛機上情緒和知覺的超量負荷。」有一堆人在你旁邊,這意味著有聲音、氣味、動作和人們的觸碰。此外,我們很多人都無法在飛行時放鬆。常常我們會對下飛機後要發生的事感到壓力或興奮。與其試圖在機上入睡,不如在下飛機後給自己額外的時間從疲勞中恢復精神。

Experts say there are no simple solutions to this tiresome problem.

For most of us, flying business or first class isnt just an option, especially as ticket prices continue to rise. Being squeezed into an economy class seat for a short flight might not seem too bad, but on long haul trips, it can be hell. A number of people have trouble sleeping on such flights, and according to sleep experts, theres no simple solution to the problem.

Dr. Jeffrey Ellenbogen, head of sleep medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital, says that there are a huge number of reasons why sleep can be difficult on a plane. For one thing, theres the temperature. To sleep properly, your body needs to be able to release heat, and it cant do that if youre wearing clothing made from synthetic fibers. More important than this, he says: People underrate what an emotional and sensory overload being on a plane is. There are a huge number of people around you, and that means sounds, smells, movement, and people touching you. In addition, many of us are not relaxed when we fly. Too often, well be stressed or excited about what will happen when we get off the plane. Instead of trying to sleep, it might be better to simply give yourself extra time after the flight to get over your tiredness.
