(International) Tensions Soar Between China and Japan
Ever since Shinzo Abe took office as Japans prime minister, there has been a series of clashes and conflicts between China and Japan. Apart from disputing over the sovereignty of Diaoyu Islands, China has even dispatched naval vessels to sail outside Japanese territorial waters and sent fighter jets to patrol the islands every day. These moves all indicate that both sides are testing each others patience.
According to overseas media reports, if Japan continues to turn a blind eye to Chinas warnings, China will launch an attack to teach Japan a memorable lesson. Tensions between the two countries have risen to an unprecedented high since the two sides established diplomatic ties in 1972. With Japans repeated attempts to test Chinas patience, it appears that Abe is hoping to solidify his status as the leader of Japan through military power.
Over the past year, Abe has successfully revived Japans economy through easing monetary policy. However, problems regarding inflation and the safety of the Fukushima nuclear power plant have also surfaced. In a bid to maintain his approval rating, Abe has been provoking dispute over national defense at the expense of Japans diplomatic ties with China. This move has in turn put Japan at risk of war with China.
