(Health) Obesity Is Becoming More Common among Children
It appears that childhood obesity is becoming an epidemic in the country.
It has recently been reported that over twenty-five percent of elementary school children in Taiwan are either overweight or obese. According to a report by the Health Promotion Administration, obesity among schoolchildren has reached about 30 percent in males and just over 20 percent in females. Moreover, the percentage of overweight or obese male schoolchildren was found to be higher than that of Japan, the UK, Germany and Canada.
The alarming report has prompted the Ministry of Education to send a notice to schools, reminding them to refrain from giving students sugary drinks and candies during Christmas. Nonetheless, reactions to the notice have been mixed. While some have praised the notice for showing concern for students health, others see little harm in gifting students with sweet treats provided that it is done in moderation. Not surprisingly, schoolchildren, who usually look forward to receiving candies, are also opposed to the idea, saying Christmas would not be Christmas without sweets.
