美國要求中國釋放諾貝爾獎得主的民主運動份子劉曉波。

劉曉波在2008年被羈押，2009年執筆懇求民主，因反政府而遭逮捕。

美國國務卿約翰凱瑞最近發表了美國的立場，表示：「我們強烈敦促中國政府釋放劉曉波、終止（他老婆）劉霞的軟禁，並保證給予劉曉波和其家人國際認同的人權保障及自由。」

許多人主張劉曉波的情況沒有受到應有的重視，焦點都偏重在美國的貿易關係和中國就敘利亞和伊朗外交議題的支持。然而，凱瑞表示：「隨著美國跟中國建立起有建設性的關係，美國領袖將會持續增加關心中國與尊重律法、人權、宗教自由和民主規範相關的事務。」

隨著也曾因身為人權及民主運動份子而被監禁的納爾遜曼德拉最近逝世，許多人拿曼德拉跟劉曉波和他被監禁一事的來相比（儘管規模較小）。當全球領袖都哀悼他的離去的同時，曼德拉的死也讓世界各地民眾重新注目於民主議題。

(Politics) US Wants Xiaobo Released

The US is calling for China to release Nobel Peace Prize winner and democracy activist Liu Xiaobo.

Xiaobo was detained in 2008 and formally arrested in 2009 for government subversion for penning an appeal for democracy.

US Secretary of State John Kerry issued a Washington statement recently saying, We strongly urge Chinese authorities to release Liu Xiaobo, to end his wife Liu Xias house arrest, and to guarantee to Liu Xiaobo and his family members all internationally recognized human rights protections and freedoms.

Many people claim that Xiaobaos situation has not been taken as seriously as it should in favor of US trade ties and Chinas support regarding diplomatic issues with Syria and Iran. However, Kerry stated, As the United States builds a constructive relationship with China, US leaders will continue to raise concerns related to respect for the rule of law, human rights, religious freedom and democratic principles with their Chinese counterparts.

With the recent death of Nelson Mandela, who was also imprisoned for being a human rights and democracy activist, many are making similar (although on a smaller scale) comparisons to Xiaobao and his detainment. Mandelas death has renewed public interest in democracy issues worldwide as leaders across the globe mourn his passing.
