(Technology) Taiwan Chip Industry Fails To Attract Taiwanese, Needs To Change

Taiwan is world famous for its chip-making abilities, but the industry is failing to attract young people into its signature business, according to Tien Yu Wu, chief operating officer of Advanced Semiconductor Engineering.

Taiwan is the worlds largest chip maker. Last year, Taiwan garnered $63 billion in sales, the equivalent of more than one-fifth of the global total, according to the Taiwan Semiconductor Industry Association.

The reason the obviously lucrative market is not attracting young graduates, however, is that businesses have a low profit margin, at times even losing money. The chips, a major component in computers, smartphones and gadgets around the world, make very little profit for their producers, with the majority money being earned by larger companies that use them. According to Wu, Were the guys in the hot room, forging iron and taking the heat, and someone else is reaping the benefit, and things need to change so that Taiwanese chip makers receive a larger percentage of profits.

Current chip technology may also need to be upgraded, meaning higher costs to the manufacturers. The number of transistors on a chip doubles every two years, but current chip designs are unable to match this pace.

What the future holds in store and how this will affect Taiwans chip making abilities remains to be seen.
