(Travel) Coney Island Is Thrilling Visitors Once Again

The New York beach resort is undergoing a massive redevelopment to bring back its former glory.

Coney Island began attracting visitors in the early 19th century, and it reached its heyday in the 1920s and 30s. The area fell into decline after the Second World War, and many of its landmarks lay abandoned. Thats all changing now, though, as developers are moving in to revitalize the beachfront area in New Yorks Brooklyn. Shopping centers and sports bars are planned, and Coney Island already has a few attractions that are very popular.

In May, 2010, Luna Park opened by the seafront, and the child-oriented amusement park helped bring an estimated 14 million people to the area. The development shares its name with a famous old park that burnt down in the 1940s. Other old Coney Island landmarks have fared better than that, and the 1927 Cyclone rollercoaster is still operational. It stands next to some brand-new rides called the Soarin Eagle and Steeplechase.

There are plenty of other new amusement park rides to amuse or terrify you, but thats not all you can do here. There are also movie screenings by the beach, Friday-night firework shows, and circus trapeze artists and jugglers. And for food, theres no better place to visit than Nathans, home of the annual Nathans Hot Dog Eating Contest.
