(International) World Unprepared For Ageing Populations

A global study by the UN and an elder-rights group has found that the world is not prepared to support its swelling numbers of elderly people. The Global AgeWatch Index, created by elder advocacy group HelpAge International and the UN Population Fund, was established to, address a lack of international data on the extent and impact of global ageing. Information on the study, which looked at such factors as income, health, education, employment and age-friendly environment, was released on the UNs International Day of Older Persons.

The report looks at the social and economic well-being of people in 91 countries. The study echoes what elderly groups have been stating for several years V that nations are just not prepared to deal with ageing populations. It is predicted that by 2050, for example, that for the first time in history seniors older than 60 will outnumber children younger than 15.

In terms of ranking, Sweden ranked number one, and Afghanistan was at the bottom. In general, wealthy nations were better prepared for ageing.

The report found that the fastest ageing countries are the developing ones. These countries included Jordan, Mongolia, Vietnam, Nicaragua, and Laos. These countries all ranked in the bottom half of the index and their predicted number of older people is expected to triple by 2050.
