(Travel) Oman V A Country With Its Eye on the Future and the Past
The Middle Eastern nation is quickly becoming a center for tourism in the region.
Situated on the eastern edge of the Arabian Peninsula, Oman is simultaneously one of the most traditional and yet most progressive nations in the region. The country has shunned the kinds of flash, modern developments favored by its neighbors in the United Arab Emirates. Even the biggest cities have an old-fashioned Arabian feel, but tourists are not restricted in terms of dress and women are regarded as equals to men.
In the heart of Muscat V the countrys capital V lies Muttrah, which is home to Omans oldest Souk. The market has stalls for food, incense, intricately embroidered clothes, and a range of engraved wooden souvenirs. As youd expect in an Islamic country, there are lots of mosques in Oman, and the biggest is the Grand Mosque. Visitors are allowed to look around the site in the morning, and the main hall contains a giant carpet and chandelier.
For a taste of genuine Bedouin culture, you can head out to the Wahiba Sands desert. The sand dunes here are over 6,000 years old, and theyre still traversed by nomadic Bedouins. If youre interested, you can hire guides to take you into the dessert in a 4x4 car or, for something a bit more traditional, on the back of a camel.
