(Sport) Running Madness Sweeps Over Taiwan
With new twists being given to road races, the running boom is now bigger than ever.
Running events have recently surged in popularity in Taiwan with tickets often being sold out instantly. As well as marathons for those serious runners who wish to take on the physical challenge, there are also party races for those who simply want to have a blast.
One of the hottest running events right now is The Color Run. Touted as the happiest 5k on the planet, the noncompetitive, un-timed race puts the fun into running by spraying participants, who are dressed in white T-shirts, with colored powder. Another event that attracted overwhelming participation is Attack on Flour, in which the runners were covered in potato flour.
While running has become the second most popular sport in Taiwan, according to a survey by Sports Administration, Ministry of Education, last year, safety concerns have been raised regarding the biodegradable dyes and flour used. It is feared that the inhalation of these powders may be harmful to the respiratory system. Participants are therefore advised to wear masks and goggles, or use the towels provided to cover up their nose and mouth during the races.
