With beautiful cider and more than its share of cultural attractions, Normandy is well worth a visit.
Despite the fact that the Second World War finished more than sixty years ago, Normandy is still best known around the world as the starting place for the Allied invasion of France. The rustic region in the north of France has much more to offer than just old battlegrounds, though. The rural region boasts wonderful beaches, quaint towns, world-beating cider, and a wide variety of cultural attractions.
If youre interested in trying the local cider, then a trip down Normandys Route du Cidre is a must. The road winds its way through a countryside area known as the Pays dAuge, where youll see orchard after orchard of apple trees. The local producers will be happy to sell you their cider V just remember that its alcoholic, so try it when you get back to your hotel if youre driving.
For a slice of culture, head to Rouen. Not only will you find sumptuous medieval churches, but this town was also the home of painter Claude Monet. His house and gardens, where he painted so many of his masterpieces, are still open to the public. You should also visit the Musee de la Tapisserie de Bayeux to see the Bayeux Tapestry. This, arguably the worlds most famous tapestry, tells the story of the Norman conquest of England in 1066.
