(Health) Why Staying Home When You Are Sick Is Important

With the colder weather and flu season approaching, many people will soon find themselves with a cold. While it may be tempting to push past it, take your medicine and continue working, there are many compelling reasons not to.

First, there is a social obligation. Going to work sick means you will, most likely, make your coworkers sick. If everyone does this, office production will decrease and you create an unhealthy environment. If you work with the elderly, immuno-compromised, or young children, you put them at direct risk for becoming much sicker than you. What you feel as a minor cold could cause them serious illness.

Additionally, if adequate rest is not taken at the onset of a cold, you put yourself at risk for prolonged sickness and other health complications. When the body is healing it is important to rest V overexerting yourself can cause underlying conditions to be amplified and put stress on vital organs. The risk of heart attack, liver damage, and kidney damage all increase an average of 10-20% in people who ignore adequate recovery time. Proper rest also allows your immune system to boost infection-fighting cells and antibodies, and if taken at the onset of a cold can reduce its duration by 2-3 days.
