(Life) A Fifth of Packaged Rice Not Up To Standard

After Chyuan Shun Food Enterprise Co, one of the largest rice mills and distributors in Taiwan, selling rice under the Sunsuivi brand name, was found to be selling imported rice labeled as locally grown, more mislabeled rice products have been discovered.

Upon recent inspection by the Agriculture of Food Agency (AFA), 19 percent of packaged rice failed to satisfactorily match their content to their labels. In particular, Chyuan Shun Food Enterprise Co had the most number of below-standard products. Meanwhile, other well-known rice sellers such as Union Rice and Yeedon Enterprise Co., Ltd. also had products fail the inspection.

In the wake of the inspection result, Sunsuivi was fined NT$440,000, as per the Food Administration Act, and was required to remove all the mislabeled products from the shelves. However, none of the other rice sellers were fined for it was their first violation.

In an attempt to improve food monitoring and management, an amendment to the Food Administration Act will also be made. The maximum fine against unlawful food sellers will be raised to NT$3 million and food sellers who violate regulations may have their food dealership certificates of registration revoked as well.
