(Business) British Business V Time To Look Beyond US and UK
British businesses have been criticized for not expanding internationally as much as they should. A leading group of economists recently recommended 50 growth markets that they should be targeting for expansion.
According to the Royal Bank of Scotland, nearly a third of the UKs economy is made up of exports, yet the majority of British businesses still focus their efforts on traditional trade bedfellows the US and Europe. Only 25% of UK goods and services were sold into the recommended 50 export destinations, and the report states that, Mexico, Brazil and Taiwan stand out as missed opportunities for the UK.
In terms of ranking, China tops the compatibility chart with the UK, and countries such as Saudi Arabia, South Africa and Malaysia may be in the top 20. Taiwan comes in tenth, due to the fact it, has high income levels and is one of the easiest places with which to do business. Turkey is also significant, as its three biggest imports (petroleum, telecommunications equipment and cars) are key UK exports.
While many are skeptical of emerging markets, David Fenton, a senior economist at RBS, stated caution is good, But they will still be the biggest contributor to global growth over the next five years.
