The northern Italian city is not famed as a tourist hotspot, but thats one of its many special qualities.

When you think of incredible Italian holiday destinations, you generally dont think of Trieste. Located in the countrys northeastern corner and lying just a short drive away from Venice, it shouldnt be surprising that its often overlooked. Its charms are not as obvious as those of its neighbor, and unless you look carefully, you might miss many of them altogether.

Triestes biggest and most important attraction is its central square V the Piazza dellUnita dItalia. Three sides of the square are made up of gorgeous, elaborately built and lavishly decorated 18th- and 19th-century buildings. That would be interesting enough, but what makes the piazza so special is that it is completely open to the Adriatic Sea. Day or night V when its lit up with thousands of lights V the square is simply divine.

The piazza aside, though, the best way to see Trieste is to forget about visiting landmark after landmark and simply wander its sometimes chaotic, sometimes orderly, always intriguing streets. The fact that its not a tourist mecca means that it hardly ever gets overcrowded, so you are often able to settle back and enjoy life the way the Italians live it V and nowhere do they live it quite like they do in Trieste.
