(Politics) Obama Condemns Egyptian Violence
President Barack Obama announced an official decision to cancel joint military exercises with Egypt due to their recent violent situation. Obama stated, The United States strongly condemns the steps that have been taken by Egypts interim government and security forces.
Both sides in the Egyptian conflict, however, are blaming the U.S. for being part of the reason the turmoil exists. The U.S. Military involvement with ousting Mursi, the first freely elected president in Egypt, followed by no attempts on their part to have him reinstated, leave many speculating that the U.S. accepted, and possibly supported, a governmental coup in Egypt.
Egypt is of significant strategic importance to the U.S., as it is the most populous Arab nation, has control of the Suez Canal (which the U.S. uses for trade and military), and has close ties with Israel.
Washington spokespeople have stated that the U.S. will continue its ties with Egyptian leaders and review its aid policies in light of the conflict.
Estimates that more than 600 people have been killed and thousands wounded in Egypt have been circulating, with many believing the numbers to be much higher.
