(Technology) Taiwanese Most Reliant on Smartphones
The new age phenomenon of nomophobia is apparently the worst in Taiwan.
According to Google, the Taiwanese are more dependent on their smartphones than their counterparts in the Asia-Pacific region. 2013 Our Mobile Planet: Taiwan, a study that examined the behaviors of 1000 Taiwanese smartphone users, shows that a staggering 81% of smartphone users in Taiwan need to have their cell phones with them when they go out. Following closely behind are the Japanese with 80%. Hong Kong and Singapore place third and fourth respectively.
Whats more, the study suggests that the number of smartphone users in Taiwan is still growing rapidly. The smartphone penetration rate for the first quarter of 2013 saw a 32% increase from the same period last year to 51%, indicating the major role in which smartphones play in the lives of the locals.
When it comes to shopping, many people use their smartphone to research a particular product or service first, and use the information to contact businesses, make purchases or visit the stores. Stanley Chen, general manager of Google, says the trend of shopping via cell phone is becoming more evident in Taiwan and that he believes cell phones will rise as the new way to shop.
