(International) Britain And U.S. Step Up Security In Yemen, Evacuate Personnel

Security concerns in Yemen have caused the American government to issue travel warnings to Yemen, close offices and order nonemergency personnel to leave, and urge American citizens living in Yemen to leave after an Al Qaeda communication was intercepted which stated the intention to carry out an attack in the very near future.

British governments have also followed suit, with the Foreign Office in London saying that, due to increased security concerns it is withdrawing diplomatic staff in the capital of Sana.

The intercepted electronic communication was said to be between Ayman Al-Zawahiri, who succeeded Osama bin Laden after his death, and the head of the Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula, who is based in Yemen. In the communication, there appears to be plans to wage an attack on a scale similar to the September 11th attacks in 2001.

Yemeni military officials said an American drone strike on Tuesday in the eastern Marib region killed four men suspected of being Al Qaeda members, and there have been reports that a Yemeni helicopter with American personnel on board was shot down in the same area while protecting a large oil refinery.
