(Travel) Ecotourism in Cambodias Koh Kong Province
Situated near to the border with Thailand, the Cambodian province of Koh Kong is establishing itself as a regional center for ecotourism. It is a new and remarkable development in an area that until very recently had scant contact with the outside world. For years, Koh Kong suffered with poor infrastructure, but with that now changing, the area is attracting visitors keen to take in its unique charms.
The jungles of Koh Kong contain huge sections of virgin rainforest and a diverse array of animal life, which includes the endangered Asian elephant and tiger. The region also contains an archipelago of 12 pristine islands. Perhaps the areas biggest attraction, though, remains its people, and thousands of tourists are flocking there to see for themselves the beauty of Cambodian village life.
Improvements in infrastructure arent the only alterations Koh Kong has undergone over the last few years. Until recently, the area was rife with poachers and loggers, but all that began to change in 2007 when a conservation group called Wildlife Alliance began working with the locals. The project successfully converted poachers into tour guides and villagers into guest house owners so that people have an incentive to preserve their precious ecosystem.
