(Education) Asian Universities Introduce Courses for Female Business Leaders

Asian universities are following in the footsteps of Western universities to offer educational training to female leaders in business.

According to a 2012 report by global management consulting firm McKinsey, women in Asia only account for 6 percent of seats on corporate boards and 8 percent of those on executive committees. This is exceedingly low compared to the US and Europe.

In a bid to close the gender gap in Asian corporations, a number of Asian universities, including the National University of Singapore and the University of Hong Kong, are now offering courses to women to prepare them for the boardroom and provide insights into the unique context of female leaders in Asia. The programs generally cover case studies, experiential learning and coaching.

It is attractive to join a group of women executives from diverse backgrounds and exchange with them the various challenges facing executives of both genders, said Anne Parkin, one of the students in the program offered by the University of Hong Kong. The community will certainly benefit from having access to a pool of female leaders who can easily move proactively into leadership roles.
