(Health) Female Inmates Illegally Sterilized
Californian womens prisons have come under scrutiny over the past several years as reports that 150 pregnant women were signed up for permanent sterilization after they gave birth, without following the required state approval procedure, have surfaced, according to the Center for Investigative Reporting.
According to the law, medical procedures must be approved by a medical review committee, but it has come to light that Californias California Institute for Women in Corona, and Valley State Prison in Chowchilla, werent following this procedure between 2006 and 2010, possibly even longer.
One doctor, Dr. James Heinright, described the procedure, which cost $147, 460, as cost efficient, stating the cost was cheap, compared to what you save in welfare paying for these unwanted children-as they procreated more.
Inmates are now coming forward with stories of being pressured into receiving the sterilization treatments and not being given alternative recommendations of less permanent equivalents, like a removable IUD (intra-uterine device) used for contraception prevention. One inmate even described being, pressured to agree to a tubal ligation while strapped down and sedated in preparation for a C-section.
