(Life) Hong Kongs Duck Is Copied in China

An editorial in the Peoples Daily condemned the fake inflatables.

When a huge, inflatable rubber duck appeared in Hong Kongs Victoria Harbor last month, it attracted a huge amount of interest around China. Now, it seems that developers in some cities are not content with looking at Hong Kongs duck, and have made copies of the 16.5-meter-tall work by Dutch artist Florentijn Hofman. Rubber ducks are now appearing all over China, and the Peoples Daily has attacked the imitations.

An editorial in the paper described the original work as being part of humanitys shared culture and childhood memories, pure art and anti-commercialization. The piece went on to say that the replicas will ruin our creativity and our future and lead to the loss of imagination eventuallyK. The more yellow ducks there are, the further we are from Hofmans anti-commercialization spirit, and the more obvious is our weak creativity.

The editors disgust may not be strong enough to stop the demand in inflatable rubber ducks, though. One firm, KK Inflatable, is already selling the items on shopping website Taobao. A relatively small two-meter duck costs 2,800 yuan (US$460), while the biggest size, a 20-meter-high bird, is priced at 149,800 yuan.
