(Business) European Commission Targets Tax Avoiders

It seems certain that world leaders will now do something to tighten international tax laws to stop firms avoiding paying taxes.

Corporate taxation was once again in spotlight last week, as European Commission President Manuel Barroso said that nations within the EU are losing around a trillion euros in tax revenue every year. Speaking to the European Parliament, Barroso said that the figure was twice the level of the EU states total annual budget deficits. That is a huge amount of money to simply let through the net, the president noted.

As European governments battle to overcome a series of sovereign debt crises, this issue is becoming important. Leaders from across the region were due to meet for summit level talks last week, and tax avoidance was set to be the number one item on the agenda. The issue is also set to be raised at Junes G8 meeting, and the UK will argue for international tax reform.

The UK was one of the first countries to speak out about this problem when it revealed that Starbucks had paid a very small amount of tax in recent years. The firm responded by saying that it would pay additional money in taxes for 2013 and 2014.
