(Business) Japanese Economy Grows Quickly
The signs appear good that the economy is finally recovering.
The Japanese economy grew strongly in the first quarter of the year, suggesting that an economic recovery in the worlds third largest economy is well on the way. Gross domestic product grew by 0.9% over the three-month period, the fastest pace in around a year. The figures point towards an annual growth rate of 3.5%, which would be a lot better than last years 1% growth.
Analysts are crediting the expansion to the policies of Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe. The leaders decision to aggressively ease monetary supply has been dubbed Abenomics, a term Hideki Matsumura, from the Japan Research Institute referred to when he commented: The economy is expected to grow further for now thanks to the impact of Abenomics.
In order to break the cycle of deflation, which has plagued the Japanese economy for years, the countrys central bank is pumping currency into the monetary supply. At the same time, the government is planning to spend large sums on infrastructure projects. As a result of these moves, the yen is losing value, which encourages people to spend and makes it easy for Japanese companies to sell their products overseas.
