(Local) Gender Income Gap Widens

Experts say the country needs to take a lead in terms of gender equality.

All China Womens Federation President Shen Yueyue said last week that China is not doing enough to improve gender equality in terms of pay. In fact, she revealed that the gap between wages paid to men and women is actually getting larger. Shen noted that since China is home to about a fifth of the worlds female population, the country has a responsibility to tackle this important issue.

In 1990 women living in cities were paid 78% of what their male counterparts received. That figure fell to 70% by 1999 and to 67% in 2010. The situation was even worse in rural areas where women received 79% of mens wages in 1990. Twenty years later, however, women in the countryside were only getting 56% of what men received.

Wang Xiaolin from the International Poverty Reduction Center in China said part of the problems has been caused by men and women typically working different fields. Many female migrant workers stay at the low end of the service sector, such as working as waitresses in restaurants, while men take more positions in the manufacturing industry, whichKhas undergone rapid upgrading, he said.
