Japans standing restaurants are famous for providing affordable top-quality dishes cooked by chefs trained in Michelin starred restaurants. Theres a wide variety of food available, since the city has French, Italian, Chinese, and Japanese standing restaurants.

A typical meal in a standing restaurant costs around 4,000 yen (US$39.30), a price most people are able to afford. The ORENO Corporation operates 18 restaurants in Tokyo, and its executive director Michio Yasuda explained the philosophy behind the restaurants, saying: Only a tiny portion of people can afford to eat at Michelin starred restaurants but those who earn a modest income should also be able to try high quality food.

ORENO now wants to see whether its business model can stand up in New York. The company wants to open a top-class Japanese standing restaurant in the middle of Manhattan. Standing restaurant chef Hiroshi Shimada said: Japanese food at a top-rated place in New York is so expensive. We want to completely change that.
