(Education) East Asian Universities Climb University Rankings
The top spots are still taken by schools in the US and UK, however.
The Times Higher Education magazines 2013 international university rankings were published recently, and they show that schools from East Asia are catching up with their Western rivals. There is still only one East Asian university V the University of Tokyo V in the top ten, but there are now 16 in the top 100. That figure includes five from Japan, three from Singapore, two from South Korea, one from Taiwan, two from Hong Kong, and three from China.
Rankings editor Phil Baty noted that the number of East Asian universities in the top 100 was not a surprise, saying: We are seeing a trend of Asian universities rising, making more of a mark globally. He explained that the change has come partly because of an acknowledgement by some East Asian governments that spending on universities is vital to their economies.
The top ten places are still dominated by UK and US institutions, with Harvard University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology coming first and second. UK schools Cambridge and Oxford took the third and fourth spots, with the University of California, Berkeley rounding out the top five.
