(Technology) Urine Testing App Launched
The technology tests users urine for medical problems.
A smartphone app that tests urine for potential medical problems was unveiled at the recent TED (Technology Education Design) conference in Los Angeles. Called Ucheck, the app was developed by TED fellow Myshkin Ingawale, and it makes use of a phones camera to test for 25 health issues. It is thought that the technology could be especially useful in the developing world.
To use the app, people have to collect a urine sample and put a special dipstick into it. The stick is then placed on a mat before a picture is taken of it with the smartphone. The technology will be available from Apples app store at the end of April V Android versions are in development. It will cost US$20, and that price includes the mat and five of the testing sticks.
Researchers at the King Edward Memorial hospital in Mumbai, India will examine the app and test its accuracy against normal laboratory equipment. If it does well, Ingawale said, we can make it available to mobile clinics. Instead of buying a $10,000 machine they can use their existing smartphones.
