北韓針對新一波的聯合國制裁作出回應，表示將花錢擴大軍備，增強「核子嚇阻能力」。根據北韓國營媒體中央通訊社（KCNA）報導，平壤當局將「採取實際行動」增強兵力。北韓同時表示，未來將不再就核武計畫參與任何會談。

(International) North Korea Promises Increased Nuclear Deterrence

The state was responding to expanded UN sanctions against the country.

North Korea has reacted to a fresh wave of UN sanctions by saying that it will spend more on its military and increase its nuclear deterrence. According to the countrys state-run news agency, KCNA, Pyongyang will take physical actions to improve its military. The country has also said it will not take part in any more talks over its nuclear program.

The sanctions were agreed upon after North Korea launched a rocket in December. The rocket successfully put a satellite into space, but the UN believes the country was testing long-range missiles, an action which had already been banned under previous UN resolutions. North Korea is unrepentant and responded by saying that negotiations were dead. It blamed the USs worsening policy of hostility toward North Korea for the decision.

UN sanctions were agreed upon after the US and North Korean ally China were able to reach an agreement on the issue. China had previously said that the response by the United Nations Security Council should be prudent, moderate, and conducive to peace and stability in the Korean Peninsula.US ambassador to the UN, Susan Rice, commented that North Korea would pay an increasingly steep price for future acts of defiance.
