(Education) Highly Educated Compete for Low-Paying Jobs in China

Thousands of college graduates applied for cleaning jobs in Harbin City.

A national debate over the value of higher education has been instigated due to the number of people with masters degrees applying for poorly paid jobs. In Harbin, Heilongjiang Province recently, 41% of the 11,539 applicants for jobs as sanitation workers had a degree. Among the 448 people eventually hired were seven with advanced degrees.

Commenting on the issue, Wei Chang, who serves as the deputy director of the Harbin city administration bureau, said he was surprised by the number of highly educated applicants applying for the posts. I didnt expect this post to attract so many well educated job seekers, he said. Education experts have said the story shows that there is a lack of jobs for the countrys best educated individuals.

However, others have pointed to another reason for the unusual applications: the fact that public sector jobs are considered as stable. The monthly salary of 1,600 yuan (US$256.8) is only a little over the national average, but job security is important amongst many young people. As one of the new, masters-qualified cleaners said: Although the work is hard, it is stable. I will never have to worry about losing my job.
