(Local) The World Watches Chinas Aging Population
A UN population representative said Chinas social security network could be a model for other nations.
Arie Hoekman, the UN Population Funds China representative, has spoken of the important role China could play in the way in which the world looks after its growing elderly population. Chinas National Committee on Aging says the countrys elderly population currently accounts for 22% of the worlds elderly people, and that proportion is expected to increase to 26% by 2050. According to Hoekman, the world will be watching to see how China cares for them.
China has the largest population in the world and it is the only country in the world with close to 200 million people aged 60 years or over, Hoekman said, adding that the government is trying to build a social security network for its aging population when its GDP per capita is $5,400, so China could be setting a model for other countries to learn and follow.
While many refer to aging populations as a problem, Hoekman focused on what elderly people can offer to society. Older people make massive contributions to society as workers, mediators, educators, volunteers, homemakers, caregivers in addition to being sources of knowledge and guardians of culture, he argued and said that we should try to add life to years, not just years to life.
