(Local) Beijing Authorities to Improve Flood Defense Systems

The city was devastated by a downpour last month.

Beijing authorities have announced that they will improve the citys flood prevention infrastructure. River channels in and around the city will be dredged to remove debris, and dikes and reservoirs will be strengthened. Officials say that this will help the city withstand severe storms like the one that swept through the capital in July.

Beijing received its biggest downpour in around 60 years on July 21 this year. The average level of rainfall stood at 170mm, but in some areas, as much as 460mm of rain fell during the storm. The downpour left 79 people dead and damaged at least 160 cultural relics.Citizens around the country were angered by Beijings weak flood defenses, and leaders have been forced into action.

Beijing Water Authority Director Chen Jing promised that all the mud, trash, and other debris that washed into the rivers during the storm will be cleared by October. He added that work on reservoirs, dikes, and smaller rivers will be finished by next June. In addition to this, a new law stipulates that new housing communities must be fitted with large rain storage facilities.
