(Education) Should You Study or Should You Sleep?
Lets face it; we have all been there, procrastinating and then trying to cram a whole semesters work into our heads the night before the finals. Though, as much as we would like to believe that the extra studying time pays off, it rarely does.
A new study by the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), suggests that staying up late cramming could in fact hurt our grades. After examining the study and sleep habits of 535 students from Los Angeles high schools for two weeks, it was found that those who took a more organized approach to their studies attained better grades. By contrast, those who regularly stayed up late to study reported more instances where they did not understand something in class or performed poorly in a test.
The study author emphasizes that it is not problematic to spend more time studying overall, as long as it is not at the expense of sleep. Also, students are advised to use their school time efficiently and spend less time on outside activities. Moreover, if they have to cram, they should do it a day ahead to ensure a good nights sleep before the exam.
