The new French president must act quickly to silence his opponents fears.

French President Francois Hollande returned from vacation this week and immediately found himself under pressure. Critics have attacked the Socialist Party leader for relaxing while the situation in Syria spins out of control and France suffers from economic problems. Hollandes approval rating has already fallen from a post-election 61% to 56% in July, and he will have to act quickly to prove that he has the skills necessary to lead his country.

During his election campaign, Hollande labeled himself Mr. Normal, a tag which won over voters who were tired of the flashy style of his predecessor, Nicolas Sarkozy. The problem now is proving that normal doesnt equate with average. Sarkozy argued that normality falls short of the demands of the job of being president, and some voters are beginning to worry that the former president might have been right.

Hollande has already made some changes, lowering his salary, raising taxes for the wealthy, scrapping plans to raise VAT, and changing a reform that would have raised the age of retirement from 60 to 62. However, he will have to do a lot more to convince his doubters that he can deliver his election promise to balance Frances books.
