Yahoo has snatched a top executive from rival tech firm Google to be its new CEO. Marissa Mayer said she feels honored and delighted by the appointment and will become the companys third chief in the last 12 months. Carol Bartz was dismissed last September and Scott Thompson was forced to resign in May after allegations came to light that a computer degree listed on his resume was not real. The announcement surprised many in the tech world, as it was assumed that interim CEO Ross Levinsohn would get the job on a full-time basis.

Observers have suggested that Mayers appointment shows that Yahoo will focus on new technologies and products rather than online content. Analysts agree that its a good decision, and Scott Kessler of Standard and Poors said: A lot of people did not believe that Yahoo could get someone of the caliber of a Marissa Mayer to become the CEO at this stage.
