(Education)Brown Appointed as UN Education Envoy

The former British prime minister will try to help more children in developing countries receive an education.

Former British Prime Minister Gordon Brown has been appointed as a new UN global education envoy for Secretary General Ban Ki-moon. Since leaving his post as prime minister, Brown has written a number of papers about education in developing countries, and he says his new job is a great privilege. His target is to see 61 million additional children start their education by 2015.

Since the start of the year, Brown has been working to set up an international fund to help all children receive an education. He says that ensuring that every child in the world has the opportunity to go to school and to learn is a longstanding passion of mine, adding that education breaks the cycle of poverty and unlocks better health and better job prospects.

Brown has studied education in conflict zones, and in a report on South Sudan, he wrote that girls in the country are more likely to die giving birth than complete even their elementary school education. Enrolling an additional 61 million children and ensuring a quality education for all by the end of 2015 will not be easy, he says, but it is a goal which, working together, we can achieve.
