(International)Annan Meets Iraqi and Iranian Leaders

The peace envoy is looking for a new approach to end Syrian violence.

Special envoy for the UN and the Arab League Kofi Annan last week visited leaders in Iran and Iraq to discuss the ongoing violence in Syria. The former UN secretary general told Syrias neighbors that the troubles could spread throughout the region and asked for their help in ending the bloodshed. Annan wants to strengthen regional support for his peace plan.

After meeting with Annan, Iranian Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi said that his nation was part of the solution in Syria. Annan commented that Tehran could have a positive role in the situation, but the US questioned this opinion. White House spokesman Jay Carney said: I dont think anybody with a straight face could argue that Iran has had a positive impact on developments in Syria.

Annan was due to speak with UN Security Council last Wednesday and was expected to tell them that recent talks with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad were constructive. Noting that the pair had agreed on a new approach for peace, Annan said: We agreed an approach which I will share with the armed opposition.
