聯合國國際原子能機構（IAEA）總幹事天野之彌，在本週初抵達伊朗，要和該國首席核談判代表賈利利會談。伊朗尚未允許IAEA參訪重要的核子設施、和官員對談，或檢視四年多以來的相關文件，但是天野表示，他有信心可以達成協議。

天野與賈利利的會晤，將安排在伊朗與世界六強原定的核子談判的前幾天。來自中國、美國、英國、法國、俄羅斯和德國的代表將於5月23日與伊朗官員在巴格達會面。世界各地擔心伊朗正試圖發展核子武器，但伊朗表示其核計畫僅與發電有關。

天野說，他有信心會談將頗具成效，他還告訴記者，「我真的認為這是達成協議的大好時機。」他隨後補充道，「伊朗和國際原子能機構之間最近幾輪的討論一直進展良好。所以，我認為現在是適當的時機…去拜訪伊朗並且和高級官員進行直接會談。」

(International)IAEA Chief Arrives in Iran for Talks

He was confident that an agreement with the Middle Eastern nation could be reached.

Yukiya Amano, the head of the United Nations International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), arrived in Iran at the start of the week for talks with the countrys chief nuclear negotiator, Saeed Jalili. Iran has not allowed the IAEA to visit important nuclear sites, speak to officials, or look at relevant documents for over four years, but Amano said he was confident that a deal could be struck.

Amanos meeting with Jalili would come days before scheduled nuclear talks involving Iran and six world powers. Representatives from China, the US, the UK, France, Russia, and Germany were scheduled to meet with Iranian officials in Baghdad on May 23. The rest of the world is concerned that Iran is trying to develop a nuclear weapon, but Iran says its nuclear program is solely concerned with generating power.

Amano says he is confident that the talks will be productive, and he told reporters that I really think this is the right time to reach agreement. He later added: There has been good progress during the recent rounds of discussions between Iran and IAEA. So I thought that now is the right time... to visit Iran and have direct talks with high officials.
