The Japanese mens soccer team will travel to this years summer Olympics with a secret weapon up their sleeves: rice balls. Theyre not going to eat them, or even feed them to rival players, instead, reports claim, the team has been using the snacks as part of a bizarre training session routine.
The balls, which actually have a triangular pyramid shape, are like large versions of the Japanese onigiri lunchtime snack. Made of rice and wrapped in seaweed, theyve been used to sharpen goalkeepers reflexes. Explaining the unusual tactic, goalkeeping coach Hisanori Fujiwara said: The ball is irregular in shape, so it behaves irregularly through the air, too. It sharpens reactions and helps improve concentration.
The Japanese team is known for its unorthodox training methods, and players have previously worked on their skills by playing with volleyballs. This might be the strangest method yet, but goalkeeper Takuya Masuda seemed impressed. It was good practice, he said, adding: Hopefully we can apply it in matches. The team will play its first game against Spain on July 26.
